Chances are the process of telemetry enhances your world and you don't even know it. That is because this mode of transferring data is used in a number of different applications. Here is some information about the basics of telemetry, as well as a couple of examples of how it is used.

Essentially, telemetry is all about remote measuring. The basic process of the approach is to make use of remote devices to gather data, specifically measurements of some type, and then relay those results to another device or location. The science behind telemetry makes it possible for the receiver to work with the data without having to actually be present at the gathering site in order to benefit from or analyze the collected information.

One excellent example of the modern use of this approach to gathering data is the use of satellites. Using scanning equipment, satellites can gather all sorts of information about phenomena occurring on the planet, such as weather conditions and movements. At the same time, a satellite can gather measurements related to the movement of various types of heavenly bodies, such as the moon, asteroids, comets, and other masses found in space. This data is then transmitted to receivers on the surface of the earth, allowing scientists, meteorologists, and other researchers to make use of the gathered data.

Of course, you don't have to look to the heavens to find an application of telemetry. If you own a car, then this scientific gathering of data is occurring very close to home. Transmitted data is what allows you to know when the oil is low, and to see how many miles have been put on the engine of the vehicle. Components under the hood transmit this data to measuring instruments that in turn convert the data into terms that the driver of the vehicle can understand. So the next time you notice your oil or gas light flashing, you can thank the process of telemetry for helping you avoid what could be both an inconvenient and costly problem.
