Staying in cottages in Cumbria gives you the scope to really explore this beautiful part of the world.

Cottages in Cumbria give you all the room required for walking kit, bicycles and climbing gear for example. They also tend to make a guest explore the local area more whether that is purely sightseeing, finding activities to discovering tucked away restaurants and pubs.

Cumbria and the Lake district National Park is full of stunning scenery and interesting places to visit and things to see and do and for the less activity minded, there are hundreds of pubs, restaurants and tea shops selling food that caters to all tastes.

For the tourist wanting an activity packed holiday, the Eastern Lake District or Eden Valley, has it all. For the truly adventurous then there are facilities for flying lessons from Carlisle airport. Flying over the Lake District lets you see the landscape in a completely different light. The lessons fly over the most spectacular mountains such as Skiddaw and Great Gable. Gliding is also available from Skelling Farm in the Eden Valley.

For those wanting to fish then Blencarn Lake offers 15 acres of fly fishing. The Eden Valley offers some of the quietest and under fished waters in Cumbria whilst offering spectacular views at the same time. Blencarn Lake is great for advanced fishing enthusiasts but they also offer lessons for beginners.
The Eden Valley has a more open landscape making it ideal for horse riding. There are horse riding lessons and sessions available on conventional horses but Cumbria Heavy Horses give you the opportunity to ride a Shire or a Clydesdale horse on the stunning Lakeland fells.

But what does Cumbria and the Lake District do best, walking! Endless walks meaning when you park up at your Cumbrian cottage, your car need not move again should you not wish. With many cottages being located in walking paradises, a choice of routes can be found from outside the cottage door. Walking is the cheapest activity and often the most rewarding and with a little bit of prior planning, the route can finish at one of the many traditional Lakeland pubs for that well earned pint.

For the food enthusiast then Cumbria and the Lake District is a true haven. The Lakeland landscape has a high number of quality farms producing some of the best animals and meat in the whole of the UK. These quality animals produce the fine milk used in the Abbott Lodge jersey ice cream. A working dairy farm produces over 40 flavours of delicious ice cream from Jersey cows. Herdwick lamb is a regional speciality and should be sought out too. It isn't just farm produce that Cumbria knows a bit about. This area has some of the best quality artisan bread makers in the north of England. The Village Bakery at Melmerby is one of the most famous. It is an organic bakery that use a wood fired oven to bake their bread and cakes. They have a shop, restaurant and tearoom well worth a visit. Taking back some of these fine foods for cooking in Cumbria cottages it even more special.
